Pastor’s Notes
This Sunday we embark on a brand new study in the book of Nahum! As a church we are continuing our deep dive into the Old Testament books that bring so much light and power to the Gospels and New Testament story. If you have been with us this year, Nahum is a continuation of a similar message Micah had for the people and us today.
The meaning behind the name Nahum means comfort, but comfort is not really what this old testament prophet brings to the people that find themselves in harm’s way. Nahum does not waste any time with introductions or pleasantries,
God is jealous, and the Lord avenges.”
These are strong words to start with, but Nahum is just getting started.
Who can stand before His indignation? And who can endure the fierceness of His anger?”
This is a rhetorical question as Nahum is sending the message that no one is above God’s love, but also His judgment. Nahum is speaking to the people of Nineveh, the center of the imperial operations of the Neo-Assyrian Empire. A group of people that God has shown great patience with, but patience is now being replaced by judgement.
The people that Nahum is speaking to are directly connected to the book of Micah as the Assyrians were the army that was used to show God’s judgement on Israel. What is so fascinating about the connection between Micah and Nahum is how we are witnessing God’s involvement within the same story from different vantage points.
During our time in Nahum, we will be warned, educated, and shown the power of God. We will be called to repentance as we will at times see ourselves in the people Nahum is warning. We will also see God’s mighty will and plan for all people.

Read Micah 2:1-5 as both books overlap in history and seeing God’s word in Micah helps us see His message clearly in Nahum.

1.) What do you think when you hear the word jealousy connected to God and His creation?
2.) Have you ever experienced the displeasure of the Lord in your life?
3.) How does Nahum’s hard words encourage you today as a believer? Think of who God is speaking to and how we can see provision today by the same promises.
