Exodus

EXODUS 25:23-26:37

PASTOR’S NOTES

Moreover you shall make the tabernacle with ten curtains of fine linen…”

As I grow in pastoring and in my studies, I have seen that there is a sermon in just about everything.  Not just any message, but a powerful one! There’s a sermon in the first sip of coffee in the morning, a challenging run on a hot day, and in a sunset as well as when the sun rises.  God speaks in the loud and obvious ways, but also during the times when His message is harder to see.

Scripture works in the exact same way.  There are so many clear and obvious messages in God’s word that cuts to the heart or encourages a greater faith, and then there are passages that create more of a challenge to see where the sermon is.  Exodus 25-27 is a good example of sermons that are not as obvious.

However, the message is still very much there.  When looking at scripture that highlights directions or calls us the specific details such as this week’s text does, we often wonder how this scripture is “for our good.”  How are the measurements of a table, lamp, and tent helpful to my faith or everyday life?

In the week’s text, I believe God calls us to see what He is doing just as much as He calls us to hear what He is saying. What is God doing with His children as He gives them step by step on how to build the tabernacle and all that remains inside it?  If you take notice, God starts at the heart and works outward.  God began His directions with the Ark, the dwelling place of God, and slowly moves outward.

What a helpful and beautiful message for all of us to see and hear today. God works and desires the same for us now.  Before disciplines that help us, works and good deeds, God desires a heart change.  Nothing mattered in the tabernacle, even the tabernacle itself, if the ark of the covenant was not prioritized first.

Today, God calls us to a heart change and through that heart change, everything else flows.  If not, we just become tent builders.

SCRIPTURE TO GO ALONG WITH THE MESSAGE

Read Ezekiel 11:19 as this is directly connected to Exodus 26.
