Exodus

EXODUS 6:9 – 7:13

PASTORS NOTES

There is a lot to be said in a last name.

Near the end of Exodus 6, we receive a lengthy genealogy connected to Moses and Aaron.  Most readers and even scholars are somewhat confused by this section of chapter 6.  Usually we are given such history behind certain characters at the very start of a book, not in the middle of a chapter, let alone six chapters in.  So why would God be giving us this text at this time?  We believe that all of God’s word is for our good and also never misplaced or misspoken, so what is the message behind this genealogy?

As we try our best to muscle through all of the names in this text, remember that God is telling us something powerful.  Think about how God used each man, woman, and family.  Think about how sin and faith played a part of God’s plan.  Think about all of the generations led to the moment of Aaron and Moses moving in God’s call in Exodus.  These names might not mean a ton to you and I today, but there are great stories of God’s plan of salvation woven through each and every family given to us.

The power in the text is the remembrance that God uses every name and every generation in His plan of salvation and glory! Today, we see the same truth.  God uses generations to lead other generations to all lead to His wonderful plan.  Most of us only know the history of those who live in our home, but God has used generations before and will after us to show the world our glory.  There is a lot to be said in a last name!

SCRIPTURE TO GO ALONG WITH THE MESSAGE

Read 2 Corinthians 5:16-21 as we see that God has given us a new name and a new life outside of our genealogy.
