Pastor’s Notes
The first two chapters of Exodus has covered a lot of ground. Just within two chapters, we have basically touched on 400 years of history and a good portion of Moses’s life. Now it is time to slow down as the next thirty-eight chapters describes the one year of liberation for God’s people coming out of Egypt.
Our adventure starts with a powerful message of where God finds His instrument of deliverance. Much like Peter the fisherman, God uses the unlikely Shepard in Moses. Not only was Moses a lowly Shepard, but he was a Shepard in a time in his life where he probably thought God had no use for him. Let alone a major use!
Remember the message from last week. Moses was in his own “wilderness” as his sin and actions threw him out of Egypt. Moses was a murderer and not worthy to be used in God’s great plan for His people. Moses’s sin led him to a far away place, a new life far from anything that screamed, “I am ready to be used by God”.
However, just as we see all throughout the Bible, God uses the lowly and humble to carry out His grand design. Moses was lowly and had been humbled and primed for God’s plan!
Paul tells us in 1 Corinthians,
God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are”.
In chapter 3, Moses encounters God. God uses nature and fire to show His power and plan. God was about to send Moses to accomplish great things in His name.
Moses had tried to save God’s people before, all by himself. Moses had good intentions and could have been seen as justified by his actions. However, Moses was not called to act and in that, he failed. The difference between then and now is God’s timing. Moses’s success was dependent on God’s timing. This is a lesson we all need to see and learn.
God, through Moses is about to do powerful things. Deliver His people!! All on His timing.
