GALATIANS 3
PASTOR’S NOTES
If the Law doesn’t save and Paul seems to confront it in the teaching of God’s goodness, why are rules still important and where does the Law still have place in the walk of a Christian? How do we balance the two? As believers, it is important for us to understand that the Law of the Bible still helps us, even though it will not save us. The Law does not give life, but it will help guide us in living out the life grace provided.
Rules guide behavior, not a desire to obey them. Not only do we see this truth in our spiritual walk, but we see it in our legal system all the way to our parenting. Making laws, posting rules on the refrigerator, and threatening punishment only goes so far. Fear and the desire to be a rule-follower will sway at some point if there is not a true understanding of the “why” and a buy-in to the “rule-maker.” A love of a father will always provide more life than the fear of a punishment.
In chapter 3, Paul crushes the law with what Christ accomplished on the cross, but also points to how the Law still has a place in the believer’s life. In Galatians, Paul pours the true Gospel into the people because a heart change is what is needed, not a list of rules. A list of rules without a heart change is a “curse” Paul tells us. A curse because we will never be able to live up to the perfection needed or bought into the reason why we are called to such a life. Faith in Christ and the grace that is provided will give us a new life and heart. A new heart that will lead to greater living.
