Galatians 2:11-21
PASTOR’S NOTES
For if I build again those things which I destroyed, I make myself a transgressor.”
Have you ever attempted to rebuild something that God already destroyed in your life? Have you ever tried to lay sand on a solid foundation? In this week’s text, Paul confronts Peter in his attempt to do just that. Peter had spent a lifetime in faith and preaching a message that the Gospel was for all people, just to now drift towards a life of hypocrisy in Galatians 2. Paul sees Peter treat the gentiles as less than; a message that Peter preached against in Acts 10. Peter knew that the Gospel was for the Gentiles as well as the Jews, but he found himself trying to rebuild a mindset that God had already destroyed in his life. Even though he knew the truth, his behavior did not follow in this example. So far in Galatians, we have seen a pattern of the right behavior with the wrong beliefs. However, now we see the right beliefs with the wrong behavior. We don’t witness a distorted Gospel, but a distorted behavior. Galatians reminds us how easily we drift towards legalism and hypocrisy. God’s word calls us to avoid both these errors.
