Pastor’s Notes
What things were gain to me, these I have counted loss for Christ.”
Let’s just add one more amazing quote to the long list of amazing quotes from Paul seen in the book of Philippians! Last week we taught through giving God the glory for the transformation that has occurred in our life. We see in Paul’s life such a beautiful transformation of not just his life and actions, but his heart and how he sees the world ever since salvation.
This week Paul continues that powerful theme of transformation by telling us what is most important in the life of a believer. What our new natural response towards life should look like now that we are filled with His Spirit. Paul begins by speaking to the people of the church of Philippi about how they should not settle for anything less than true worship and rejoicing in the Lord. On the subject of settling, Paul speaks to us about the emptiness that comes from a legalistic and empty walk; Being a box checker. We see that serving and following the concept of “A God” is not being a born again follower of “The God.”
In Paul’s specific context in history, most believe that he is referencing the Judaizers. A group that said they were one thing, but were totally something else. Paul saw these imposters as a threat to those he loved and to the church as a whole. He viewed them as dogs and and evil workers.
Fueled by his rejoicing in Christ and driven by his warning to protect the church, Paul comes to us this week describing the only thing that is important, a true and genuine heart change. Transformation!! He knows that the best way to guard the church from those who look the part on the outside is to show them a picture of what real transformation looks like on the inside.
“You might be fooled by the look, so focus on the heart.”
The furtherance of the Gospel can only occur through transformed hearts, not through legalistic rule followers. Paul here is shining a light on his new heart and setting an example of not only what is most important, but what is needed to fulfill our purpose.

Questions to consider
1.) When you hear the word “Rejoice,” what comes to your mind? When was the last time you truly rejoiced over something?
2.) When it comes to personal walk, do you believe your church experiences have lifted or smothered your rejoicing?
3.) What exactly about your church has either stirred your affection towards Christ or smothered your heart towards legalism?
