Pastor’s Notes
During our last two weeks in Philippians, Paul has truly hammered down the importance of the church. Paul began by simply reminding us all that the church is not just a gift, but a needed part of our daily lives as believers. The church should be seen as a family, brothers and sisters, and those who we would do anything for.
After showcasing the need for the church, Paul highlights the responsibility of the church as the world looks at us to set the example of how those should treat each other. He tells us that we are “lights in a perverse generation.” As believers, we are given the opportunity and responsibility to point to the goodness of our Father in Heaven by how we love one another within the body.
This week, Paul strengthens his case by giving us all personal examples in Timothy and Epaphroditus. Two men who love, serve, and live for not only God, but also His people. Both of these men committed to praying for the people of Philippi and lived a life committed to serving them in every way possible. When the people of the church rejoiced, these men rejoiced with them. When the church struggled, these men struggled with them. Oh, that we would have such vulnerable and passionate hearts, that our emotions would be tied to the health of the church and the advancement of the gospel through it!
During this time in history, the Roman church was a “me centered” and self-centered group of people for the most part. So much that Paul would say that in Timothy, “For I have no one like him, who will be genuinely concerned for your welfare.” What an example in young Timothy, but how sad that there were no more like him around.
In today’s culture, we are in the same need as the people of Philippi were in. We are all in need of men and women who love us, pray for us, and serve in such a way that draws us closer to the King! Today’s church needs young people like Timothy and servers like Epaphroditus. Just imagine what the church would like with a congregation filled with Timothys!

2.) Who in your life do you yourself model the servant life of Christ towards? In what ways do you do this?
3.) In your own sanctification, how have you cultivated a selflessness and servant heart vs a selfish one?
4.) What practical ways do you believe could grow you even more to becoming more like Christ in service of others.
