DEUTERONOMY 20
"When you go out to battle against your enemies, and see horses and chariots and people more numerous than you......"
Even in the land of milk and honey, there will be problems. Moses tells the people that there will be poverty, law breakers, and there will also be war. In this week's text, Moses talks to the people of God about what faithful warfare looks like from a faithful perspective. Remember, just because the Promise Land is an imagery of Heaven, it most defiantly is not Heaven. Even in obedience to all of God's commands, Moses has told the people that they will still experience brokenness and conflict in the land of abundance. In chapter 20, Moses tells the people that there will even be war!
When it comes to war, the Bible has commands concerning how to faithfully battle. Moses speaks to the people about how to first seek peace, how to battle those who are on the outside of the land, as well as those who are living within. Praise God for His word that speaks to us about all matters. As we have said many times, there is nothing under the sun that the Bible doesn't confront head on. Even war!
However, this week's text is about so much more than warfare. Even in the midst of conflict, Moses continues to urge the people to a place of trust and faith in God. It's the battle from within God is after the most. One could read chapter 20 and easily say that this chapter is a chapter about having a confident faith in God more than a text on how to address war with those who refuse peace. Moses knows that conflict is inevitable, and war is promised, but faith and trust in God's provisions cannot be missed by His people.
There will always be war. Until Jesus returns, conflict is unavoidable. This is seen in the conflict from a global scale to battles we face individually every day. There will be times in our life that we are called to seek peace with those who stand against us and a time we fear the army before us that outnumbers us. There will always be a time we are called to trust God and have faith that He will not only lead us, but provide all that we need.
Looking back at the life of God's people, more than an obedience issue, they had a faith issue. Their own lack of faith was more of a dangerous foe than the armies that outnumbered them. God called them and you and I today, "Have faith that I have you!" Trust God in your battles and war! When the opposition refuses peace, remind yourself of the promises of God to those who are faithful. That He will never leave nor forsake you. That He is the one who walks before you, that will fight for you!
War is inevitable, faith is essential.
