DEUTERONOMY 18
“The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your brothers—it is to him you shall listen—”
My name is David Wilkins. I am one of many leaders here at Eastview Baptist Church. I am very humbled and privileged to get to speak to you on Sunday. I am currently leading our youth alongside a great team of leaders, one of whom is my wife, Jade. You may also know me as the guy who stands before you every Sunday and welcomes you to service and shares important announcements. I am very excited to have the opportunity to speak to you, God’s people, on Sunday about His Word.
That’s exactly what Deuteronomy 18 is all about – God’s Word. Last week Pastor Hunter finished up chapter 17 with a word on good Godly leadership. Everything trickles down! Christ is the ultimate humble servant leader we should all follow.
In this week’s text, Moses reminds the people of the Godly leaders they have in the Levites, as they minister to the people of God. He then warns the people to stay away from some abominable practices going on in the land before them.
Church, have you ever wondered about the future? Have you ever wished you could know what would happen next? I remember watching the movie “Back to the Future” for the first time and just thinking about how cool it would be if we knew what was going to happen before it happened. That movie came out in 1985! If given the chance to go back in time, what would you tell your past self about things to come? Many of us have lived through hard times, times of doubts, times of struggle that we can look back on and see God’s goodness in. Some of us are going through hard times right now, times of struggle and times of doubt.
In Deuteronomy 18, Moses is warning the people not to go looking for answers about things to come or supernatural things by means of ungodly pagan ways, but instead to continue to listen to the voice of God. However, there is a problem arising. Moses has been that direct line to God for His people, but Moses isn’t going into the land with them, so who will talk to God for them. Where will they turn for answers? The answer? In short, God isn’t leaving His people. He’s always been and will continue to be WITH His people. He’s reminding them to lean on the leaders He’s chosen for them, and to seek Godly counsel in times of doubt and hardship. God also has another plan in mind, which is His spoken Word through the prophets!
This text is a glimpse into the plan God laid out for his church and His people. We have been given an extraordinary gift–God’s Word. God knows there will be hard times. There will be times of struggle. In those moments, we are to listen to the voice of God. Listen to God through our pastors and leaders, through Godly counsel from those walking alongside us, and ultimately and primarily to God’s Word–a lamp unto our feet.
I pray we are all reminded we serve a God who is unchanging and always WANTS to speak directly to YOU, everyday!
Stay faithful church,
David
