DEUTERONOMY 16
"Remember the day in which you came out of the land of Egypt all the days of your life."
God has been calling His people to remember His goodness and their rescue since the beginning of time! If one word has been repeated more than any other, it has been "remember". Moses has called the people to remember Egypt, remember the wilderness, remember past failures and remember future callings. Remember has been the theme of all three sermons Moses has preached to the people before entering the Promised Land.
Each person's walk depended on their remembrance!
In Deuteronomy 16, Moses calls the people to come together and "remember" with one another in worship. In this week's text, Moses lays out the importance of coming together and honoring God in remembrance of His goodness and their need as a faithful community. We see this week the importance of worshipping together in the remembrance of God's grace and our testimonies! These gatherings were the Passover, the Feast of Weeks, and the Feast of Tabernacles. These were special called gatherings where individual obedience and worships became community praise and revival. These moments in the old testament were glimpses of the future church and the power of corporate worship.
Through these community gatherings, we continue to see intentionality in God's plan for His people to stay faithful. God knew that to live in remembrance, His people would need others called to the same faith worshipping side by side. His people would need reminders to remember!
Once again, we see glimpses of the future church. As a church, this week we will celebrate our Lord's Supper. The Lord's Supper today serves in the same manner as the different celebrations we read about in Deuteronomy 16. They were different but founded in the same call to remember God's goodness and praise His name with others. Today we are called to remember God's goodness through His Son Jesus's death on the cross! Much like we read in Deuteronomy, Jesus instructs His disciples and later Paul the church to partake in faithful celebrations and disciplines in the remembrance of the blood that is shed for the remission of our sins. Today, God calls His people to do this with one another in fellowship!
Take time this week and read the text below before taking the Lord's Supper so that our hearts are fully prepared to celebrate His goodness together.
