DEUTERONOMY 15
"You shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the Lord your God redeemed you; therefore I command you this thing today."
Let God's grace fuel everything you do! Throughout our study, Moses has woven God's grace into all of his lessons to the people. God's mercy, grace, and blessings have been the moving force to everything he has charged the people with as they cross over the Jordan and into the Promised Land. Grace has been the fuel to worship, obedience, giving, and now how they were to treat others. The book of Deuteronomy is about how to live differently in the light of how God has blessed! Moses tells the people in verse 14, "From what the Lord your God has blessed you with, you shall give."
In this week's text, scripture focuses on taking care of those who struggle or from a worldly perspective, are undeserving. Even though the people were going into a land like they had never experienced, it doesn't mean that there wouldn't be some that struggled down the road. It's possible to still struggle in the land of blessings. Remember, the Promised Land is a picture of Heaven, but it's not Heaven. Even surrounded by spiritual and earthly blessings, there would still be sin and struggle for the people. In that struggle, the people of God were called to minister. Moses tells the people to let the grace that had been shown to them while in the wilderness fuel the kindness to others that were experiencing their own wilderness.
Today, God's call to show grace to those who struggle has not changed. We live in a world where those who struggle are all around us. We live in the midst of poverty, sickness, depression, and addiction. There are so many struggling, undeserving people around us in need of grace. Just as Moses told the Israelites, God's word calls us to show the same awareness of the mercy and grace that was given to you and I so that we can give others the same.
I pray that you don't miss all the foundational ways God's word is calling the people to in this new life of promise. We started with repentance, then worship, living differently, giving, and now how to take care of the people around us that share our land. We are reading God's blueprint to faithful living! I pray you don't miss this.
During the time of Moses and also today, the people of God are called to stand out in how they live, worship, and treat others. We are called to treat others, not based off of circumstances or what they deserve, but in the light of the mercy and grace that God has shown us. We are called to love others in the unforgotten truth that we were once the lost, struggling, and undeserving people begging for the grace that God gave.
I pray we will never forget where we came from and where He found us.
I pray we never forget that it was Christ who saved and Christ who rescued.
I pray the gospel fuels us to love in the same way.
