DEUTERONOMY 5:1-22
“And Moses called all Israel, and said to them: “Hear, O Israel, the statutes and judgments which I speak in your hearing today, that you may learn them and be careful to observe them.”
PREPARE YOUR HEART
This Sunday we will study one of the most familiar passages in all of scripture: the Ten Commandments. For many of us, the Ten Commandments are simply viewed as a list of rules. But before God gave Israel His commandments, He first reminded them of who He was and what He had already done for them. (Read Deuteronomy 4:41-49)
God rescued Israel from slavery before He ever gave them the Law. That is important. The commandments were never meant to help Israel earn God’s love. God gave them the commandments because they already belonged to Him. Their obedience was meant to be a response to His love and grace, not a way to earn them.
For followers of Christ, the same thought applies today. We are not saved by following a list of rules. We obey because of our faith in Christ and His finished work on the cross. The commandments are not a means of earning salvation but a guide for living in a loving relationship with our Lord after we have been saved.
In Matthew 22:34–40, Jesus sums up all the commandments into two main thoughts: love God and love others. He shows us that the commandments are less about following a list of rules and more about living in a relationship with God and with those around us.
This week, ask God to prepare your heart to hear His Word with fresh ears.
Stay faithful church,
